The 7-Day Hair Reset for Dry Hair
If your hair feels dry, rough or dull as autumn sets in, a week of focused care can help bring back softness and shine. This seven-day reset clears away build-up, rebuilds moisture and leaves you with habits to keep through the colder months. It won't transform your hair overnight, but by day seven most people notice hair that feels softer, tangles less and looks glossier.
Before you start

Choose a fairly quiet week, as a couple of days are about giving your hair a rest from heat. If you're not sure whether your dry hair needs moisture or protein, start with our guide: Does My Hair Need Protein or Moisture?
You'll need a clarifying shampoo, a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, a hair mask, a leave-in or serum, heat protection, a wide-tooth comb, and a microfibre towel or soft cotton T-shirt.
Day 1: Clarify

Styling products, hard water, chlorine and summer suncare can all leave a film on the hair that stops conditioners working properly. Start the week with one clarifying wash, focusing the shampoo on the scalp and letting the lather run through the lengths as you rinse.
Follow with conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Once is enough for this week, as clarifying too often can leave dry hair feeling drier.
Day 2: Go heat-free
Give straighteners and tongs the day off. Let your hair air-dry, or rough-dry on a low heat setting until it is about 80% dry. If you do need to style, always apply heat protection first.
Detangle with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working up to the roots. Pulling a brush through from the top is one of the quickest ways to cause breakage on dry hair.
Day 3: Deep condition
This is the heart of the reset. Apply a mask to clean, towel-dried hair from mid-lengths to ends, leave it on for the time recommended on the pack, and rinse with lukewarm water.
If your stretch test suggested your hair needs strength, choose a protein or keratin treatment today. If it felt rough and straw-like, choose a moisture mask.
Day 4: Rest and refresh

Skip the wash today. Smooth a small amount of leave-in or serum through the ends to tame frizz from central heating, keeping it away from the roots.
Wear your hair in a loose style, such as a low plait or a soft bun with a fabric scrunchie. Tight elastics and high ponytails put extra tension on dry lengths.
Day 5: Gentle wash day

Wash with a moisturising shampoo, again focusing on the scalp, then condition the lengths. Afterwards, blot your hair with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt rather than rubbing it with a bath towel. Rough towel loops can lift the outer layer of the hair and add frizz.
Day 6: Protect your lengths

Autumn friction adds up. Tuck your hair inside your coat collar or wear it up when you're wearing a scarf, and sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce rubbing overnight.
Take a close look at your ends today. If they are split or feel very rough, book a trim, as no product can fully mend a split end.
Day 7: Set your autumn routine

The last day is about deciding what to keep. For most people with dry hair, that looks like:
- Washing two or three times a week with a moisturising shampoo
- A mask once a week
- Heat protection every time you style
- A clarifying wash every two to four weeks, or more often in a hard-water area
Write it down as actual days so it sticks. Keep the habits that felt easy and drop anything that felt like a chore.
How to fix dry hair for the rest of autumn
After seven days, expect softer, more manageable hair rather than a total transformation. The real results come from carrying the routine forward. Repeat the reset whenever your hair starts to feel dry again, such as after a holiday or once winter properly sets in.
